ABSTRACT :

Physical and biogeochemical scientists in Japan are planning to conduct observational researches and modeling studies on variability and long-term changes in the eastern Indian Ocean as well as variations in overlying atmosphere. Several research cruises, using R/V Mirai and Hakuho-maru, together with other observational activities will be organized during the coming 5 years. Both the physical aspects and biogeochemical parameters will be observed and analyzed. High-resolution ocean models with a global domain and/or regional domains are utilized to understand mechanisms of upwelling systems and their impacts on large-scale circulations. Although there is no national science committee for EIOURI and IIOE-2 yet in Japan, interested scientists are enthusiastic about implementation of these international research initiatives and are expecting strong international collaborations. Some detailed research plans will be presented.
