We have carried out four multi-multidisciplinary cruises in the Eastern Indian Ocean around equatorial regions to study the structure and functions of Indian Ocean Ecosystem (IOE), supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). To date, very little information on IOE has been reported, especially the field investigations on many biological and biogeochemical processes. This study tries to fill this gap and some preliminary results will be presented, including the vertical profile of biological components, primary productivity and its structures, integrated growth, grazing mortality of phytoplankton, the interaction between nutrients and these biological components. The future directions on IOE study by the Sustained Indian Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystem Research (SIBER) will be discussed, and the future changes of IOE under the global change scenario will also be predicted by synthetically analysis of both field and lab experiments.
