COLLABORATIVE LISTENING - DEPLOYMENT OF OFFSHORE ACOUSTIC TELEMETRY SENSORS ON OCEANSITES MOORINGS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN

ABSTRACT :

Acoustic telemetry for tracking marine species has been successfully implemented worldwide in coastal regions for many years, e.g., Australia┐s Integrated Marine Observing System and Canada┐s Ocean Tracking Network. This technology increases our capacity to observe our oceans and related marine species┐ movements to improve, e.g., fisheries management models, monitor animal responses to climate change, and food security. The proposed project aims to interconnect regional projects through implementation of scientific research infrastructure on an existing ocean mooring network (OceanSITES). The initiation of an international network will enable capacity building on the basis of data sharing without borders for the benefit of a comprehensive understanding of trans-ocean basin movements of marine species. The project will introduce possibilities for advanced modelling and meta-analyses regarding species┐ home ranges and movement patterns in relation to oceanographic and meteorological data streams of existing databases of a worldwide system of deepwater reference stations providing dozens of variables monitoring the full depth of the ocean over multi-year time scales with high resolution. This investigation will benefit species across a wide range of trophic levels but especially for far ranging and migrating animals and will have crucial implications for fisheries management and conservation measures in a global arena. This proposed project should be considered as a first step to a fully-fledged global network incorporating the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean, Arctic and Antarctic waters, and the Mediterranean and Black Sea. All data will be freely available via an open access web interface.
