GPS USAGE AND ITS IMPACT ON SMALL SCALE MOTORISED FISHING BOATS IN KERALA: A CASE STUDY

ABSTRACT :

Satellites, a space based technology in India use to support sustainable development, manage natural resources and emergency situations. One of the key purposes of satellites is to generate data that can be translated into information for decision making purposes. The major problems lies in whether these data is effectively disseminate to the end users in a cost effective way. The integration of space technology with ICT has made ICST applications more accessible and affordable, particularly in fishing and related activities in the country. Global Position System is one the important Information Space Technology (IST) in the fisheries technology which helps the fishermen to go more deep into the sea and catch more and more fish by locating the spot of fish shoal in the sea. In Kerala, along with the mechanised and now, a large number of small scales motorised fishing crafts are using GPS at present. The study has been conducted in the north (Kozhikode & Malappuram) and south (Trivandrum & Kollam) regions of Kerala. The study aims to estimate the usage level of GPS in the selected areas and examine its impact on fishing and fishermen life. The study finds out that, most of the motorised fishermen (90%) from north and all the fishermen from south use GPS along with some other ICT tools for fishing. GPS has been adopted in southern coastal areas much earlier than northern regions. The usage level of GPS is high in the southern coastal areas compared to northern areas. In the northern region, most of the small-scale fishing is done by both one day and multi-day fishing. Southern fishermen earns on
