POTENTIAL VORTICITY (PV) DIAGNOSIS OF A NORTH INDIAN OCEAN TROPICAL CYCLONE FORECAST- A CASE STUDY.

ABSTRACT :

A new version of NCMRWF Unified Model (NCUM) which has a new dynamical core (ENDGame-Even Newer Dynamics for General atmospheric modelling of the environment) combined with improvements to the model physics has been implemented at NCMRWF recently. The performance of the new version of NCUM is evaluated for the prediction of VSCS Hudhudand is compared with the previous version of the model (which has New Dynamics (ND) dynamical core). The new version of NCUM has shown an improvement in prediction of the track of VSCS Hudhudas compared to the olderversion. Further we diagnose the two versions in predicting VSCS Hudhud based on the PotentialVorticity (PV) tendency and its contributing terms. PV diagnosis will highlight the response of resolved dynamics to the parameterized forcing in the two versions of themodel.
