EVALUATION OF WIND GUST EVENT AT RAMESWARAM COAST

ABSTRACT :

In this study we investigated the sudden wind gust at Rameswaram (9.28̊ N, 79.30̊ E) coast and near by, during the pre-monsoon season. European Centre for Medium Range weather forecast (ECMWF) and National Centre for Medium Range weather forecast(NCMRWF) models are not able to predict this event because of, coarse temporal and spatial resolution. In this study we are able to simulate this event with high resolution National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model. Our analysis shows that during April and May (pre- monsoon season) variation in the land surface cooling inducing a low pressure centered at around Salem (Tamil Nadu) (11.65̊ N, 78.16̊ E) region, which causing sudden intensification of winds along the coast of southern tip of India. This low pressure area able to sustain for short period less than three hours. The formation of low pressure area due to variation in the land surface cooling can be attributed to the pre monsoon/thunder storm showers which are altering the soil moisture content in the surface layer.
