EVALUATION OF THE QUASI-ANALYTICAL ALGORITHM FOR ESTIMATING THE INHERENT OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF COASTAL WATERS OFF VISAKHAPATNAM

ABSTRACT :

We evaluated the performance of the Quasi-Analytical Algorithm (QAA, v6) for deriving the total absorption a(λ) and backscattering bb(λ) coefficients of seawater and, partitioning of total absorption a(λ) into phytoplanktonic and detritus components from remote-sensing reflectance Rrs(λ), using the field data collected with satlantic underwater radiometer in the coastal waters off Visakhapatnam during January, February and March 2015 (winter season). Simultaneously, we have also estimated the concentrations of chlorophyll-a, total suspended matter, the total particulate absorption a(λ), phytoplankton and detritus absorption coefficients spectro-photo-metrically and backscattering, bb(λ) with bbp sensor integrated with radiometer at 650nm. Concentration of chlorphyll┐a is ranging from 0.11 to 7.04 mg m-3 with the mean value of 0.88 mg m-3 and TSM is ranging from 5.5 to 19.2 mg L-1 with the mean value of 9.9 mg L-1. Derived total absorption coefficient (atotal), phytoplankton absorption coefficient (aph) and backscattering coefficient (bbp) are significantly correlating with the measured values, but all these parameters were overestimating than the observed. Detritus absorption coefficient (ad) is weakly correlating with the measured value. Particulate backscattering (bbp) is showing good relation with chlorophyll┐a concentrations indicating that coastal waters off Visakhapatnam are dominated with macro phytoplankton.
