ESTIMATION OF INSTANTANEOUS GROSS PRIMARY PRODUCTIVITY USING FRRF : NEW INSIGHTS FROM ARABIAN SEA AND BAY OF BENGAL

ABSTRACT :

Estimation of gross primary productivity is an essential component of oceanic process as it links primary production to Biological Pump. Fast Repetition Rate Flurometer which is used to measure photosynthetic efficiency and reaction centre concentration can be effectively used to derive electron transport rate. Laboratory experiments suggest this has high correlation with oxygen evolution and therefore can be used to estimate gross primary productivity in the ocean. In this article we highlight the usefulness of such techniques and present some new data sets from Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal.
