ABSTRACT :

It has been well recognized that Indian Ocean and the Asian-Australian Monsoon are a tightly coupled system with great deal of interactions and feedbacks. The CLIVAR has long recognized the importance of research on the Indian Ocean and monsoons, and formed a Regional Panel on Indian Ocean and recently a Global Panel on Monsoons by combining all the regional monsoon groups. Monsoons are a global phenomenon and the overall progress in our scientific understanding of monsoons will phenomenally improve through the interaction of individuals and groups that study these various regions. Furthermore, the efforts of the Global Water and Energy Exchanges (GEWEX) project are highly relevant to the terrestrial and hydro-thermodynamic aspects of monsoons. As a result, a single Monsoons Panel jointly sponsored by both CLIVAR and GEWEX has been formed with membership drawn from both communities. The new panel will report to both CLIVAR and GEWEX Scientific Steering Groups.
