INTER AND INTRA SEASONAL VARIATIONS OF FINDLATER JET AND ITS ROLE IN SUMMER MONSOON RAINFALL OVER INDIAN SUB-CONTINENT

ABSTRACT :

Findlater jet (FLJ) is closely related to monsoon rainfall events. The relationship between FLJ and strong precipitation has been revealed by previous studies. In order to get a broad knowledge about the structure and characteristics of the FLJ during the summer monsoon season, a detailed study has been carried out by using NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data from 1997-2014. This article summarizes and assesses the current knowledge on this subject, and focuses in particular on three aspects: 1) Role of sea surface temperature gradient over Arabian Sea in relation to FLJ; 2) Critical role of moisture transport carried by FLJ from surface to 850mb affecting the monsoon activity over Arabian sea and especially during Active and break spells; and 3) The association between FLJ and rainfall and strengths of the convective heat source over Arabian Sea with the strength of FLJ. Inter and intra seasonal variations of FLJ over Arabian Sea and subsequent rainfall over Indian Sub-continent are discussed and presented.
