OBSERVED INTRASEASONAL VARIATIONS IN THE SOUTH JAVA CURRENT

ABSTRACT :

The South Java Current (SJC) is shown to have seasonal reversal in response to the monsoon forcing. The recent observation from the moored ADCP revealed that the SJC is much more variable than understood before, particularly at the intra-seasonal time scale. These intra-seasonal variations are associated with the Madden-Jullian Oscillations (MJOs) in the boreal winter and the Intra-Seasonal Oscillations (ISOs) in the boreal summer. During the convective (suppressed) phase of MJO/ISO, the westerly (easterly) wind along the equator can excite the downwelling (upwelling) Kelvin wave, which propagates eastward. It is reflected into the coastal Kelvin wave and then propagates along the south coast of Sumatra and Java. The intra-seasonal variations in SJC are the adjustment to the mass perturbations caused by the coastal Kelvin waves.
