ABSTRACT :

The present study is to understand the Probable zones of erosion and depositional patterns along the Visakhapatnam coast after the landfall of Hudhud cyclone. Visakhapatnam coast is one of the severely eroding coast in the east coast of India. The episodic events like cyclones crossing nearby the Visakhapatnam coast causing the aggressive erosion. Hydrodynamic behaviour and sediment transport patterns and bed level changes after the passage of cyclone Hudhud has been estimated using a numerical model. It is observed that the angle of wave approach to the coastline drives a SSE flow and the peak flood currents are estimated as 2.5 m/s in magnitude while peak ebb currents are estimated as 3 m/s along the coast of Visakhapatnam. The model indicates that Bed level sediments variations towards the south side of the Visakhapatnam and Gangavaram port. Sediment transport in this coastal scratch characterized by a net transport is towards north. On the other hand during Hudhud the net transport is mostly towards southern side. The regional sediment transport rate is estimated at the order of - 0.012 to 0.004meters/day.
