CHARACTERIZING AIR¿SEA CO2 EXCHANGE DYNAMICS DURING WINTER IN THE COASTAL WATERS OFF VISAKHAPATNAM

ABSTRACT :

The distribution of the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2 ) and air¿sea CO2 exchange were comprehensively investigated at 50m water column in the time series mode off Visakhapatnam during January, February ,March 2015 (Winter season). Physico chemical variables like sea surface temperature (SST),sea surface salinity (SSS), pH, total alkalinity (TAlk), dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and in vivo chlorophyll-a along with atmospheric variables were measured in order to study their role in controlling the CO2 flux. The atmospheric pCO2 ranged from 379 to 408 μatm whereas surface water pCO2 ranges from 329 to 445 μatm during study period. Surface water pCO2 shows significant negative relationship with SST and positive relationship with SSS. An overall net biological control on the surface distribution was established during the study, although no significant correlation was found between chlorophyll-a and pCO2 (water). The CO2 flux estimations for this region showed a significant source to the atmospheric CO2. This study provides information on changes in the physical and chemical processes in relation to the CO2 flux at the air-water interface in the coastal Bay of Bengal.
