DISSOLVED TRACE METALS IN THE INDIAN OCEAN: RESULTS FROM THE CLIVAR I8S/I9N AND I5 RESEARCH EXPEDITIONS

ABSTRACT :

Vertical profiles (to 1000m) for dissolved trace metals were collected in the eastern and southern regions of the Indian Ocean on two CLIVAR/Repeat-Hydrography sections, from the Bay of Bengal to the Southern Ocean (2007 CLIVAR I8/I9) and from South Africa to Australia (2009 CLIVAR I5). Trace metals were extracted from UV-oxidized samples using a novel automated extraction system developed at FSU. Concentrations of dissolved Mn and Co were quantified by standard additions while Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb were quantified by isotope dilution-HR-ICPMS and verified against the SAFe (S, D1, D2) and GEOTRACES (GS, GD) reference seawater samples. The distributions of these trace elements in the Indian Ocean will be discussed in relation to atmospheric and margin inputs, biogeochemical cycling (with the macronutrients), and particle cycling.
